Inspiration comes in fleeting moments, not inevitably like wind and sunshine on Maui. Day to day business is a poor way to breed new ideas and so I have taken it upon myself to expect inspiration only through adventures and narrowing my focus to the purpose at hand, in this case sail design. I have been designing sails for 14 years, and there comes many levels of realisation during that time. Often as the years go by it becomes "well, things are not going to get much more advanced than this", and then I know it is time to get off Maui to broaden my view and go somewhere that my mind can wander in peace while sailing in some perfectly clear water with only a few friends around. Wherever it may be, I get to look at everything around me in a different light and that is the key to unleashing new ideas. These new ideas are the core of product innovations and unique features that set Hot Sails Maui apart from the competition.
At 22, I was ready to show Maui a thing or two.
Maui- had more than a thing or two to show me I was soon to find out. In
ambitious fevor, I set out to make the best sails on Maui. I built a loft
in the cannery in Haiku above Hookipa, neigbors to the big shot Maui sailmakers.
In design and sailmaking, I did well, it was the core of Maui's sailing
that beat me up-Ho'okipa. My sails held up better than I did, washing on
the rocks, going over the falls, bouncing off the bottom. I knew the best
ways to make a strong sail, and I had new ideas for making them perform
better, but on the water timing, position, and wave knowledge were learned
hard, only through painful experience. All the while my sails went through
what I did and more. It was others with better sailing experience that really
helped the sail's design though. I was there, I knew what they were talking
about, but they were pushing the limits, while I was being limited by being
pushed around by the unrelenting surf. Working together with hopeful sailors
who work hard to make windsurfing their life and dream of being the best,
is a great way to make a well rounded sail. A solo view often creates art,
but not often smooth function. An open mind and the ability to draw on experience
is the recipe for a good design. I have always surrounded myself with the
most energetic, creative young sailors in an effort to create new design
concepts, not copies of other designs.

" Taking risks and eventually succeeding is the spice of life
and the basis of all learning."
Now working with other designers that have joined me at Hot Sails Maui,
I encourage this way of working out design ideas, and finding the perfect
blend of performance and significant innovations that sets Hot Sails Maui
apart from the competition. The result is top notch performance with a twist.
Each sail design we offer has a blend of special features that are found
on no other sails.
