Fast. If you want speed, stability and smooth handling in strong
winds, the Spiderlok Five should be the sail your rigging. When your ready
to break away from cambered sails, but want the locked in feel they supply,
you will find what your looking for in any size of these sails.
We started this project of a lightweight five batten wave sail with requests
from sailors who spend most of their high wind sailing on choppy water in
pretty gusty conditions and wanted a sail that would handle whatever kind
of gust was blown their way. They wanted all the benefits of the Spiderlok
Wave sail, but a "no brainer" to handle when conditions got out
of hand.
Jeffrey Henderson and Tom Hammerton designed this sail in the spring when
weeks of 3.3 and 3.8 sailing are not uncommon. Working within an existing
plan form (Spiderlok) but a totally different set of parameters (stiff,
high wind sail), they tweaked and tuned the front half of the sail until
finding the perfect combination of luff curves and shaping points. The result
is the Spiderlok Five now offered.
The sail is a low tension, slightly pretwisted leech design that is easy
to rig, tune and sail. It is blazing fast for a wave sail, and is a dream
to fly when you leave the water, which tends to happen often at the speeds
this sail enjoys. Handling is light and crisp making long days of sailing
are a breeze, and water starts are shockingly easily.
