yet another quad conversion...... almost done (Page 1 of 2)

Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
I think you've got the most experience of all hobbyists. I'm very happy with my tri-fin conversion of the K 11.5....in some of the pre-conversion banter on the Boards UK site, some had expressed reluctance but I ended up quite satisfied.
PS - it looks like you're developing a neck problem... ![]()

Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
Looking good - love to see the final result and hear about how it performs....
This is the Exocet - right?
Why did you decide to make it a quad ?
Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
Thanks. I will follow up on progress, its almost ready for the bottom paint.
Yes Exocet Original Wave 105L. The first quad I did is really small, 69L, so I wanted something that I could get more time on , so gain some quality quad time..... perhaps you mean why convert at all ?
Its a winter project, and I'm certain it will improve the board in certain areas. I want to try asymmetrical fins to see what effect they have on planing and turns, and I had all these slot boxes gathering dust.
It entirely possible that it will sail better as a tri fin, with small sides in the forward slots and a say a 20cm rear, the boxes are perfect for a tri. The rear are a little forward and toward the rail for a twin, but I will probably try it.
The slot boxes are rather difficult to install, these are the 8th, and feeling right now the last.
I have plans for a total paint make over on the bottom .
Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
boxes fitted ( not glued , with Black Project Fins
Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
Looks like a whole lotta grip.
Guessing your weight @160, what's your projected ideal sail type and size for the quad 105L?
Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
those are 13 & 15cm, hope to get a real quad feel with fins close to the same size. BPF do not have a lot of area for length, I really like the performance of them.
Sail.. 5.5 SF 6.3 SFUL and ideal ..umm Fire Light 5.7.
as far as fins go.. I have 13/15 ..10/16 .. 11.5/12.25 .. 8/15
and a pair of 17s
fighting weight right now 154lb
Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
where do you get the boxes from?
Pete
Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
Cobra
Having seen how they are made now, I would consider making them myself. Using pour foam as the outer shell, with carbon reinforcement on the corners, the slot itself would be a test to get right /achieve, probably would have to use some dummy fin head to size and then extract, I think the installation is strong enough, but not overly sold on the slot box ..yet.
Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
very dismal photo here, but next stage none the less
Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
How do you align the cant of the fin boxes? The ProBox setup is made to do this, but I'm curious how you do it here...
Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
They are set with 0 cant, level with the bottom surface, these were a little tricky as the board has concave.
I use a level before and during the epoxy stage. Your question has me thinking you mean toe not cant
but not sure.
The ProBox cant is adjustable with different box inserts, and really has nothing to do with setup.
The ProBox are sOOOOO easy compared to these.
Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
I was meaning cant, not toe-in, which I find fairly straight-forward. I figured you must make some kind of jig or support while the epoxy sets. Do you put a fin in the boxes to set your level? Or is that what the blocks are in the photo? I would assume you use the existing center fin as the reference, since the bottom isn't flat nor perpendicular? Seems pretty tricky!
ProBox are really quite easy, I agree. Except that I insist on mounting them in Divinicell, which adds a round of complexity because you have to rout out the foam, imbed the Divinicell in the foam, and then glass it over before starting the ProBox installation. Still, it's not bad.
Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
the blocks I use for the level, as well to fill the holes from epoxy and paint. I set a board across with weights to secure
I do eyeball the whole setup with the fins, and its pretty easy to see if its off . Because of the foam on these boxes they like to rise up when the epoxy kicks , so I watch carefully for them to set in the correct position
I install ProBox in much the same manner, but use pour foam not divinycell to fill the hole then re -router out.
Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
Pour Foam is a good solution, easier than Divinicell and still closed cell, but I didn't go with Pour Foam because it's not as strong. To me, the main issue with fin boxes is creating a closed-cell barrier to prevent water getting into the board if the fin is dinged a bit hard in the shallows.
I seriously thought about using Pour Foam, because I've got a 2 quarts or so of the stuff (a quart of each part) - enough to fill up the whole house with foam! I'll never use it all, but it's the smallest quantity I could find at the local marinas. Still, I went with Divinicell. Boardlady likes Divinicell for this purpose, but for little side-biter fins or a tri-fin, I'm not sure she'd insist on Divinicell. In normal sailing, there's not a lot of load on these dinky-small fins.
Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
finally weather nice enough to paint, looking for more of the same today so I can lay on some designs

Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
the slots look nice, you can see the steel inserts for the screws. Do they make them ?
The internal hex screws/bolts are a great idea.
The 'Joker' board is striking, way KOOL
Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
yup, boxes are flikka home mades. really really solid. Due to the big hard pvc foam easy to
mount. You can order them at Flikka. (use these magic discount word: Mons... , maybe it works;-)
available in 2 sizes.
I got those boxes also @home.. cause many board projects in my head.
Re: yet another quad conversion...... almost done
thanks I will have a look at them
anytime you want to ship Mons out .............
well always room for him
