Re: A Sail for Summer?

The maple leaf was a one off. We will have a fairly straight forward horizontal design with most Super Freak prints available.

Aaaahh... Good news.  The 7.5m is the ticket.  Ultra-light or standard Dacron?

Regular. Bomber.

But guess they would be very light in UL - but I guess regular will help in keeping a somewhat predefined shape in light winds?

The 7.5 sounds awesome....
On which mast length ?

If it the old short mast long boom combo applies one could hope that the 430 would fit smile

Re: A Sail for Summer?

Yes, sorry I missed that post, thanks for sorting me out Surfingsen (and I think I recall a post saying 460cm mast for ALL sizes).  Happy it's regular bomber - more colors.  I hope some photos appear soon... (so I know how to specify color arrangement).  Offered through the online store, or do we call the shop?  Will these be made in Hawaii?

Re: A Sail for Summer?

FYI, remember that the "regular" material is almost 50% lighter than the dacron of days old. I certainly can make them in UL, but will not make stock. The sails are going to be really light already.
Custom orders now, they will show up on the store in the summer.

Re: A Sail for Summer?

Ok Jeff - help us out here smile

So before ordering a SummerFreak;
A) How many panels to choose color for? - I counted 6 vertical panels on the maple leaf whereas the bottom one is split in two - will it be the same number of horisontal panels ?
B) Color on the mast sleeve - is it the Ox webbing and therefore just black and white or ?
C) What is the boom length for the 7.5 ? And for the others as well (more to check that my existing large boom will fit)
D) What will be the luff length ?
E) Will the top be a pinhead (as the maple leaf) or will it be a more full batten supported fathead ?

The 7.5 will be the perfect match for my old Mistral Competition for those nice summer evenings...

You mentioned in a previous post that the design was in place - could you show us something, anything smile

Re: A Sail for Summer?

Streamers will be nice . Also how about making
a HSM summer sail mast/sail sock! Length of max size
mast (460cm),  with long zipper parallel to
mast starting at open end of sock and terminating
at mid mast where boom clamps to mast.

Sail/mast sock would allow me to remove battens & roll
sail up to mast, slip sock over sail/mast, pivot
attatched boom at head then tie boom at clue to sail/mast.
Keep mast extension and base attached. This rig
will ride well on my roof racks next to my
1983 Mistral Superlight.

Sorry if I am explaining the obvious, but I have not
seen or done rigging this way in years. Hell, I ain't
ever seen a SUP with a sail on it!

Wow. A streamer is a dacron/nylon strip of cloth that is tied onto the sail (analogous to the tail on a kite) in a show of color and to help identify what group a sailor is part of. They do add drag, but add to the festivity. I have several that I've saved over the years, and occasionally put them on my sails.

Streamers have an unusual effect in that if one person has one, then everyone else wants one too. Why do you think I save mine!? I think it may have deep psychological underpinnings from flying kites in childhood or something. Probably has to do with both the festivity of color as well as serving as an insignia that you're part of "the group". Very interesting phenomenon, and I think if HSM sent their sails (especially the Freaks) with a streamer it would be HUGE.

Re: A Sail for Summer?

Hi Jeff, are dark bleu and white horizontal panels like the old Mistral sails you see in those old Mistral promotional videos on youtube possible? (these early sails where developed by Pat Love - end seventies).
Starting with a 7,5 with a streamer of course.
It will be used for an old Mistral competition that in undergoing restoration.

Haven't you seen that 80ies windsurf clip on YouTube with the topless babes? Looks like it's shot on Maui actually. A German does the voice over I think.

A. 6, yes.
B. I was not planning Ox webbing. Don't expect a lot of broken masts, or reef damage.
C. Please hold while I access that information.
D. Please hold while I access that information.
E. Who you calling a pin head? The sail will not have a full batten, no.
F. Steamer- Yes, every sail will come with one.
