Topic: How to waveride a longboard

Who says that you need a short board to rip in the waves
Found this old Mistral promovideo from around 1984

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHNcqheC … ata_player

Check especially from 7:00 to 10:30 minutes where a young well known hawaiian gentleman shows how to waveride on a 3,6 meter long Mistral Maui - and shred.....

Re: How to waveride a longboard

Thanks for the interesting video link, Surfingsen. By the way, I have been able to use the new fluorescent orange 7.0 regular super freak. You are so right about the range and the silence of that sail. Really enjoying it. No ships have turned towards me yet (!!) with that orange color which looks fantastic during sunset sailing sessions. I am sailing it on a longboard: 11'3. No waves yet b/c we are in the FL keys--have to wait until back home in north FL.....todd

Re: How to waveride a longboard

Fun stuff. That's a good tip on placement of the back foot to make those snappy top turns and cutbacks. Every board I ever rode that had "Naish" on it worked best when ridden really aggressively, and his comments show that he clearly adopted that style early. This video was obviously taken before he looped an Equipe, but in retrospect you can see it in the making...

Re: How to waveride a longboard

I think the video is earlier than 1984.  That's the first version of the Maui, and I bought the second version in 1984 (might even have been '83?).

I have watched this video several times now - there is a lot of technique to study in it for sure (a duck jybe at 9:39 that blows my mind).  Unfortunately, I will have to wait a winter before putting any of it to practice.  Many thanks for posting.

Did you see that old soft sail back-winding him in the windier section? Brings back some nightmares for sure & makes me happy at the modern gear we enjoy!

I think you're right - '82 or '83 seems more correct - I also bought my second version in '84 even though it appears in the '85 brochure - at least with the same graphics... (maybe the next years model this summer nonsense started already then...)

I thought it was so great that it should be shared with those who would appriciate it smile

I have tried for years suppressing the memories of going full tilt and then suddenly being slammed by a back-winding sail big_smile

Re: How to waveride a longboard

Cool! I have a Maui too. It looks the same except the graphics on the nose are more colorful, reds, orange, yellow. Mine also has a mast track, otherwise looks the same. So what year would that be?  Amazing what can be done when in the right hands!
I've always wondered how many liters of floatation...at 210lbs she rides pretty low in sub-planing conditions.

Yes, true, but I suspect that radical turns of the kind RN was making in the video would be harder with modern sails on a longboard - heavier, more downward pressure at the mast foot, center of effort much further forward, slower to de-power.  Having extensively sailed a sail very much like the one in the video over the past year, I can confirm (what we all knew) that in any real wind it is harder, but it is lots of fun.  It is a different sensation, and a great match for a longboard (not eager to try it on a short board, though).  Bring on the HSM version, please.

LMAO
A bloody spampost - but it will probably happen to you from too much of longboard waveriding big_smile

Re: How to waveride a longboard

Awesome. Right in there with Heart & Soul and Wavesailing Women.

BTW, after YEARS of having the latter VHS in a box of stuff I picked up in an estate sail (along with my windsurf trailer), I put it in the player and...oh my. OK, I was a runner back then, good enough to be a pure runner (and the chicks in a track meet are worth watching), but man could those girls sail back in the low 80s. Most impressive, and the best evidence I've ever seen that windsurfing is much more about finesse and technique than power. If you find that video, snag it.

Thanks for finding this.
