Has anyone tried the Euro pin version ....? how is its operation and safety release ?
I have for about a year now.
The only real advantage of our Europin system is the fact that our release button is RECESSED in the part. This means there is NOTHING that can hit it and release the pin. Except for Streamlined, EVERY europin extension I have seen can be accidentally released with a freak impact. (read in waves). The other advantage is you can take the EURO part out ad you have a fully functioning US extension.
Sooo....Jeff, please clarify. From your description, above, the HSM base has a Europin insert/adapter that fits into a US extension (as opposed to the downhaul crank that has a Europin design with a US adapter)? Can you post photos?
hi jeff
now that i'm going ahead with the 9m ul, don't forget i'll need 45cm europin extension. will that be available?
Very nice Jeff, but it still looks a sod for cold European winter fingers, which is the same trouble I have with the US base system. Is there a button that can go on the little metal push tab?
Whoops I see no button to make accidental release impossible.... See how the warm Hawaiins think differently.
I've had such frustrating times trying to release US bases with cold fingers, then I've had a Streamlined euro base that gave me the similar issue. I've never had an accidental release in the waves we have here in Cornwall or heard of one from anybody else but I of course anything can happen and in waves it usually does. Personally I want a big fat button for my numb fingers.
nice!!! I like this solution. (Will get my Ti soon... April or so, finally Torben ordered some
)

If you had a piece of dowel or something you could use as a push rod, you could work around that numb finger problem (I also struggle with US bases). Of course, that won't help if you've got a 500m carry and can't bring a bunch of stuff to the beach, but it'll work in most situations.
Thanks, Jeff! This looks like one of those adapters that came on my downhaul crank - yes? Does every base come with one of these, or do you have to order the Europin? I assume they all come with the adapter, which as a side benefit is helpful to cut inventory costs since there's only one extension in each size. Good for the customer - their extension fits all universals; good for the shop - lower inventory costs. Very clever, dude. ![]()
Yes, they come with the adapter.
I sailed cold water and air before I moved to Hawaii, so I do regretfully remember the issue. (Sailing in snowstorms was a novelty, but pretty painful) Maybe I am wrong, but this thing pushes in WAY better than the button systems due to the reduced surface area that can get jammed with sand.
Well I'm certainly willing to give one a try. Are any heading towards the UK anytime soon?
I,m going to Cornwall at the end of april.
I hope the extensions are in Holland around end of march.
When at that time you still don,t have any send me a PM and I can bring some extra with me for you.

photos are of the HSM 45cm Composite Hybrid in the Euro//US base
this is the insert, , which makes it Euro pin on the right, it is very slick, and like Jeff said has a recessed button for release. the first class downhaul line, is that slipply --strong stuff.
OF note this will work Euro or US, sweetness !!
QUESTION ? What purpose and where does the O ring have ?
weight for those GEEKs is 1lb 7oz as shown Euro/US 45cm
others I have an weighted are::
Chinook Alloy 38cm 1lb 8oz
Chinook Carbon 38cm 1lb 1oz
Streamlined Alloy 45cm 1lb 7oz
ALL in RDM all Europin
the finish on the HSM is brilliant, operation slick, like a lot.
I just purchased and received this same extension, the composite hybrid 45 cm. I have got to say that this is the best looking well built extension I have seen. Great work. The fit/finish looks great.
that o ring is odd, on one of Jeffs photos its not there, the other its clearly visible, just above the base ......?
Per NASA specs, the O-ring goes on the optional external fuel tank assembly, for sailors who want additional boost on takeoff.
FYI - Thiokol has issued assurances that cold-water sailors need not be concerned about fuel tank failures, and that thermal shrinkage issues have been addressed and resolved.
I find most things funny or at least amusing, your post neither

Wasn't dumping on NASA, I'm actually quite a fan. Something less than 5% of American astronauts (those who've actually launched) have lost their lives (including Grissom, White and Chaffee, who died in a test), which is quite a testament to NASA's abilities when one considers that the industry success rate is 1 in 3 launches yield a successfully functioning satellite (according to a satellite engineer I used to know).
At the same time, when one decides to sit on top of an unimaginably large pile of explosive material, expecting to ride it into the sky and back again, these men and women know full well that they might not come home alive....and they do it anyway. Brave? Yes. Crazy? Maybe. Tragic? Sure. Any different than any other accident where errant design and construction costs lives (e.g., Toyota brake recalls)? Not really.
When I was in medical training, one of my mentors told me while speaking of medical errors, "You've got to know who you put in the ground". He meant that you need to know and admit to yourself (and the patient's family) when your error in judgment led to a patient's death. Quite sobering advice, and no it's not funny when a patient dies, but that doesn't stop people from making physican error the target of their jokes (or air traffic controllers or anyone else). All professions make mistakes, and end up the butt of someone's jabs. Such sarcasm helps keep all professions on edge and trying harder the next time...including engineers. So lighten up.
read your reply several times, each of those professions deal with the stress of day to day operations with each other, so what happens in the control tower or radar room stays there, oh, it may be in the bar after, but its not displayed on a public forum.
instead of sarcasm, try a little mercy or humanity
@Geoff: good mentor!
instead of sarcasm, try a little mercy or humanity
Too much misery and sorrows day in day out too handle in those professions to do it just on mercy and humanity.
You need a bit of sceptism and sarcasm to keep stuff able to handle.
Without that, you probably flip.
Back Ontopic:
I hope we get those extensions soon!

I guess that not haveing lost any humanity in 30 years of being a Air Traffic Controller, made me a poor mentor.
I see things through a different lense than you 2 medical professionals, you are trying to fix things that were probably accidents, I saw things that were accidents I tried to prevent.
