Unfortunately I feel you may be right, in the USA its is difficult to compete with mass media. Exceptions:

Mario
Phil
Mark
Peter
...too bad Giles was born in Canada..or maybe not

Are we destined to only have NASCAR as American motorsport in the future?

Re: Breaking news in F1...

... And Dan Gurney. My all time favorite because he won at Spa in a car of his own design and construction (Eagles). Of course that was a different era. Bruce McLaren was also winning F1 GP's in his own cars.

We had such a good thing with CART. Sullivan, Rahal, Villinuve, Montoya, Zanardi, Andretti(s), Mansel. Then Tony had a tantrum and flushed it all down the toilet.

As for American motorsports... Looks like it's NASCAR... They are fun to watch on a road course. Last year, JPM hustling a 3000lb car around sears point was fun to watch. Don't really care for the 500mile oval track racing... Sometimes I tune in for the last 30 laps or so.

WRC is Insane! Sorry to hear Speed has dropped coverage :-(

Re: Breaking news in F1...

What an AWESOME sporting day Sunday was!

I really enjoyed Sundays stage of the Tdf. Great coverage as usual from Bob, Phil and Paul. The race is still wide open!

Then F1 from Hockenhiem. What an exciting finish! One of the best F1 races I've seen in may years. So many great battles. Then to finish it all off the McLaren boys on the pit wall suffer a brain fade and fail to pit Lewis during the SC! What the hell? Well, I think the last dozen or so laps of that race will be rememberd as the defining moments of LH's 2008 world championship.

Re: Breaking news in F1...

Sorry for not responding sooner. I love F1 but i have always lived my life by doing rather than watching. I spent the weekend on Lanai but I just got DVR so I had the race. I just watched it today on wednesday due to an insane amount of work and the finale of Deadliest Catch. I managed to avoid all info on the race and watched it like live. There was a lot of shouting!

Fantastic!

If anyone ever had any doubts about Lewis....

Just ask Felipe Massa...

Anyway, Lewis is a great driver but if Ferrari put things into place again things will only go either way in the last race.

Re: Breaking news in F1...

Felipe owned that race - what a dissapointment for him. Lewis too, I'm sure he was expecting to be on the podium. But that's racing, and that's why we will all be watching the last race with excitement as I am sure no-one will have it in the bag before then.

Still waiting for Force India to do something- anything! Just make it out of Q1!

Nice to see Haykey gain his 1st win, abet at the expence of Felipe, sorry to see David Coulthard announce his retirement, and whats up with the Kimster ?  Nelson Piquet has come in his own as Toyota and Timo Glock. Disappointment in Bourbais after a good start, but still a few races to go.

And still not in the Lewis parade

Re: Breaking news in F1...

It's been a really good year for F1 races. I can't recall ever enjoying them more. Monaco was great. I had my usual bottle of champagne and caviar breakfast while I watched it on Tivo. A fine race. This weekend should be good too. Unfortunately MotoGP has been kind of boring. I can't show for a NASCAR event, though I did watch some of the race at Infineon. Clearly some good drivers but this bump and go stuff is just too weird.

I haven't been racing my vintage car as much this year, still getting it back together after it got destroyed at Watkins Glen. The debut for the car is in three weeks--at Watkin's Glen! Same event it got pummeled in. I wouldn't be going back, but it's a big event for the Friends of Triumph, of which I an a proud member (my car, Peyote, is a TR3-based special). Jack Drews, one of the founding fathers of the FOT was killed a few weeks ago, racing at Grattan Raceway in Michigan. It's going to be a bit solemn in the pits, he was a good friend and a good man. I'm going to celebrate his life by putting his name on my car and racing the wheels off it, just as he would of.

Re: Breaking news in F1...

Nice comments about Dan Gurney BTW. I've met him a few times and got to spend some time with him. He's a real gentleman and still scratching hard. His treasured Gator project went nowhere, too bad given the current gas situation. A very ugly looking motorcycle, but extremely practical. Very quick for such a small motor and it gets absurd mileage, nearly 100 MPG. Single cylinder motor and much better frontal area than a typical motorcycle.

I spoke too soon about the F1 season. Valencia was a bore. Intersting track, nice looking city, but no passing and no close racing. Drag racing in an alley.

Re: Breaking news in F1...

And that surprised you?

With such a tight course there was no room for bravery. It was predictable, they needed to design the coursw with a few less kinks and more run-off for a more exciting race. I am impressed with how well everyone drove - I was expecting more carnage. Bad luck for Fred, not sure where to lay the blame for that one, he seemed to brake early and hard, not sure what happened in front of them.

Re: Breaking news in F1...

I'll bet we can all agree Valencia provided a beautiful venue for the race. I hope they can re-configure the track to provide a more exciting race in the future. On to Spa now, my favorite track. Hope the Kimster can get it together. Wonder what's gone wrong for him?

Re: Breaking news in F1...

Funny, that's exactly what they said about Valencia for the America's Cup racing. there is serious money involved and I think racing is suffering because of it. The quality of the track is seemingly the least important factor in deciding a venue.

Re: Breaking news in F1...

I think Valencia could be an extremely exciting track, but it's way too hard to pass on it. They need someone to design some great passing spots--room to overtake out of the slipstream. They also need a way to make being in the dirty lane a little less of a penalty in places where passing is feasible.

Spa is a wonderful track. It's really hard to watch someone of Kimi's ability flailing around out of contention. At the beginning of the year Massa's future looked dark, not it's Kimi on the block. The old man would have had him sweating gumdrops by now, with two or three replacement drivers warming up in the bullpen.

I'm not worried about Kimi - no-one thought he would win the world championship this time last year!

Re: Breaking news in F1...

If you were bored with the GP of Europe,  you for sure need to watch the GP of Belgium  at SPA, the race stewards have effected the outcome, and watch the end if nothing else.

We lost the 1st American Formula One Champion, Phil Hill, who won his first ever and last ever race, and was a great ambassator for racing. Winning LeMans 3 times as well.

Re: Breaking news in F1...

Great racing @ Monza !!! Finally one driver to make us remember Ayrton Senna, I am speaking of Lewis of course but Vettel did great too, lot's of talent there. The last races of the tour will be awesome. But guys, Scuderia Toro Rosso is very, very different than Minardi, there is not a single "Minardi screw" in the car, in the team. A great engine from Ferrari and a good car by Adrian Newey, let's see what 2009 brings for them. My guess for the championship: Felipe Massa.

Re: Breaking news in F1...

So surprise, surprise Lewis's appeal is deemed inadmisable. Pretty much what was expected, but still very dissapointing as it sets a very bad precident. We do not want F1 to end up like America's Cup! Races should be decided on the race track and not after the fact. The message it sends is "don't try too hard to overtake or you may be penalised". With a championship so close who is going to want to risk a move that in Hamilton's case cost 10 points? Far better to just follow the guy around and limit the damage right?

Re: Breaking news in F1...

http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/news/2008/09/ … -rejected/

The issue that I see is NOT the appeal itself, because this seems iron clad to be rejected, but in a situation when you do cut the course, how or if its inforced .

Sorry but the Hamilton parade continues without me.

I still can't get over that Kovalainen, had nothing for Vettel, and his disappointment showed after the race , most would be pretty happy with 2nd place.

Re: Breaking news in F1...

Yes, but because the appeal was rejected we don't get a decision on the situation and things remain cloudy.

There are maybe 4 situations that need to be addressed coming from this incident:
1. Did Kimi force Lewis off or did he leave room? And if one driver is forced off by another while atempting to pass who is responsible and who gained advantage? Where do you draw the line for safety.

2. What will satisfy the stewards if you cut the course? Apparently giving the position back is not enough.

3. How soon after "giving up the advantage" can a driver re-engage in their attack?

4. Should drivers not involved and a long way from the incident gain advantage by it? It makes sense to me that if you foul another driver they should have redress. So say Lewis did gain an advantage then he should be penalised that position. As it was Kimi spun off with no help from Lewis. Lewis now thinks he has won the race and as the conditions are apauling he slows down for safety and allows Filipe and Nick to catch up. After the race Lewis is penalised 25 seconds and drops to third. Now if Lewis knew he was going to be penalised would he have kept at least a 25 second gap? Of course he would have! Does it seem fair to retroactively impose penalties like this that gives advantage to drivers not involved? If they were going to give him a penalty it should have been during the race. The stewards were asked about it at the time and did not choose to give a penalty then. Once the chequered flag is out that should be the result. Don't hand out the trophys and pop the champagne and then change the result.

I think this needs to be sorted out for ALL the drivers. It is hard to play a game when you are not quite sure what the rules are.

The Speed TV coverage the following week addressed this:

Through the NEXT corner.

Cars have been disqualified for being under weight, for having irregualrties in fuel, barge boards too thin, all after the race.

There is no way the rules can cover all possibilities.
