Re: SOS windsurf

voila,
here some pics of the SOS 99.
They were made in non planing conditions. Windforce in wavezone, 1/2/3(so it was hard to jump or get some air) With this board you get really a lot of fun. It turns sooo nice.  What normally would be a boring just/just day now turns into a super stoked day! (I'm 85kg and used a 5.6 sail--so no power.... Sold my bigger ones because on the way back i would pic up my new Hot sails...yummie yummie)
On the same day i tried also the rrd fsw 109, exocet cross 117 and starboard aero. But they were not so direct, crispy, smooth and light to sail.

Re: SOS windsurf

Uwe,
Viana= Viana do castelo
It's a small town in the north of Portugal. It's a place where you can score in the summer some nice thermical winds. In 4 weeks, i could go everyday on the water (and my biggest sail was a 5.6)
Some days i skipped due to the "results" of the nice wines and the too good life  ;-)
For me it's a perfect easy going summerplace. Good weather, steady winds, nice conditions, friendly people, loads of friends, good food, no crowds....and no stress. Further you can always find some nice surfing spots at the atlantic coast.

Re: SOS windsurf

Uwe,
Of course you could have some luck in September. The beaches are for sure empty. The weather will still be better than in most places in Europe.
My experiences are that the best thermical winds blow in juli and august... (cold water, hot temperatures....and some mountains are so situated that you get a "turbo boost")
But in may and june i've also had some great times. Think september als can give some nice presents....

There are some nice places with wind and waves in Portugal (don't forget galicia, the north of Spain..)
Guincho, near Lissabon also got some nice winds and waves...Had good times there, but nowadays its to chaotic in summertime(in spring its better overthere) Further it's not a easy living place.
In Viana, there is a small campground right at the beach..so just a short walk and you're on the water..
If you go a little more north there is a small town called: Moledo. With a nice swell this can also be great. Sime kind of thermical winds as Viana. Allthough Viana gets more winds and its stronger.

Good news this year is: big winter southwest storms produced some nice sandbars right next to the viana pier. So when there is a nice swell, and thermical northwinds start...this is by faar the best place to have some nice waveriding conditions.
10 turns on a wave is standard!!

I want to go back. I've got some sails to test. I've to bring the "fire" to viana again

greetings,and happy holiday
David

Re: SOS windsurf

I sailed in Viana do Castelo once on my way to Guincho (I was coming from Galicia, which is another great place) and had fun, but didn't quite score the same waves near the harbor as David. It was more than 15 years ago, maybe the sandbar wasn't there...
If you decide to go check Guincho out, don't forget that when Guincho is too windy (it happens!), there's a killer spot called Ericeira a little north of it. Usually a surf spot only, it's sailable too, but be aware of:
- very strong currents
- lots of surfers
- the rocks downwind of the launching spot
- the wind may drop very suddenly
Worth it, though. If anything, just for the view. Very beautiful...

Re: SOS windsurf

Uwe,
here a small movie (made by a friend of me), so that you can get an idea of the relaxed conditions..

(i'm also in this movie-- with the black/white simmer icon, once the sos 99, and on a longboard with a sail on it)

Re: SOS windsurf

Does anybody know if the current SOS boardrange (which came in 05 or 06?) will continue unchanged for 08?

Thanks

R

Re: SOS windsurf

They started  in 2006. As far i know they stay unchanged.
When you sailed them you know why. wink
My 71 and 88 are absolute perfect, nothing to change about that!
Both are the best boards i ever sailed tongue

I had a 99 for a while, its a great board for slogging out and riding back, but on my (strong curent) homespots you need to be able to plane all the time, and it isnt a very early planing board so traded it for a faster planing type of board.
But if i would live on a spot you can slog out and pick nice waves to ride the back...this would be my first choice, because on a wave it feels a lot smaller and make you able to make hits you can,t imagine.
I got a Fish 82 board too, this isnt a "mordern" Evo alike Fishboards made for 5.8-4.7 but a lot smaller. If you take that in mind its AWESOME in 5.3 and smaller, no board can turn tighter and jump higher and still keep everything under control. It needs some wind and is more nervous as R88 but there is no other board to compare with the 82 in turnability. It made me really feel like Kauli Seadi big_smile

Re: SOS windsurf

hi friends of good toys!

this is yeahnso from berlin, germany. i´d like to know which is the biggest sail you can ride on the rocket fish 82. background is that i´m looking for a bigger companion for my awesome drops so75 for 5.3 and 6.0 conditions. guess that the rocket 92 fares better for that purpose, but it seems to be slightly too big for me.

what do you think.

best
yeahnso

yeahnso (181cm x 78kg), homespot: baltic sea,
boards: drops so 75 (246 x 54,5), wavesplash carvestyler 104 (244x64),
sails: naish force (3.7 / 4.2 / 4.7 / 5.3) and amp (6.0 / 7.0),
wishlist: HSM superfreak 6.0 , SOS rocketfish 75 wink

Re: SOS windsurf

The biggest I tried on the RF 82 was 5.8 (superfreak), it worked but I needed to be powered up to make it really work. The  R92 worked much better with the 5.8 (for me). In my opinion these boards (especially the RF) feel slightly smaller then quoted volume (probably to do with the thinned out tail). It might work for you  if you weigh a bit less then I do.
