Re: SOS windsurf

Thats even better, Jeffrey. Whilst on other places they are debating over how to classify boards (by width, volume, length) lets just use colour from now on big_smile! Blue sounds good wink I think I want a blue one too! wink

Just kidding, really curious what the people who have ridden the boards liked about them.

(By the way I had my first session on mu black and white Freak today and I love it!)

Jeroen,
just go for it, and it will open your eyes
Think those boards is what's windsurfing about

a combination of magic, soul, dedication, real fun and performance

Anyway i give Sean a big thumb up!
I'm happy that he will share with us his magic sticks!

Re: SOS windsurf

Ok guys, I'm quite confident that his boards are insane (i sailed his 4traxx), and jeroen and I will definitely go for it, we can hardly wait, u know...
But what we like to know, is there sailing characteristics.
For instance: I always had classic shaped waveboards, mainly because they're faster down the line and better to surf over the frontfoot. I tried a RRD waveswallow 68 and in comparison to the Fanatic Newwave 68 it felt like SHIT (not so fast, not so loose, not so precise). So I'm reluctant towards that fish concept, or better, I do hesitate... Maybe it's my sailing style, I don't know...

But judging from the outline, Sean's fishes are fast and loose, so now I don't know if I'd better go for SO classic 71 or the rocket fish 68. Same with the SO classic 88 or the rocket fish 82... Can one mix, or do they require a different riding style. Is the classic 71 not to close to a fish 82, and what about the gap between fish 68 and 82... etc etc

BTW: I'm really light (68kg), I wish i could sail in logo high waves every day, but small waves and gusty onshore wind is more likely to happen over here.

Re: SOS windsurf

I think having a pre-order on that 2 boards (Classic71 and Fish82) is pretty  confident wink
Its the budget limits that stops me from also ordering a Rockett99, I was just wondering.
At the moment i sail a Drops SO83 from 2005 a great board, but as bit more fishy would be even better for me.
Changing from classics to Fishes is never been a big issue for me, it is a bit different stance and way of riding but i like both.

Re: SOS windsurf

I got the 68 RF and it floats like an 80 liter board.
It is tiny, but holds steady even in bigger waves. Backside it is mental especially when combined with the supermodel boom. I went from maybe a 60 degree angle cut back to about 88 degrees- nearly vertical up and hit, then straight down. Very fun.
You know those front side cut backs Sean does? Now I can do them to, like riding on a skateboard. Everything else feels like mud now.

Re: SOS windsurf

who on earth designed the graphics for the windsurf boards for SOS???

it has some associations with our eastern neighbours a few decades ago.... (yes I live in Holland). Or is it just me?

Re: SOS windsurf

It is interesting.  I would guess it is the "surfers cross" .

Wikipedia had this to say about the adaptation of the Iron Cross to American sub-culture:

"The Iron Cross has also been appropriated by several American subcultures after WWII. In particular, motorcycle clubs, surfing and skateboarding culture, neo-Nazis, and the hot rod and custom car cultures use the symbol in various forms."

I think the original came from the Maltese cross:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maltese_cross

Then later adapted to your neighbors:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_patt%C3%A9e

Re: SOS windsurf

From what I googled, unless the cross has the Swastica inside, it is not identified with the Third Riech and predates it by centuries. Good emblem used badly, going good again.
True, US surfers have used it here and there over the years too.

Re: SOS windsurf

Hi Mark,
As a matter of fact I designed them all the way through. I am very proud of it. The maltese cross symbolizes a lot of PERSONAL reasons to me.  It is very unfortunate that there has been some very ignorant and  close minded people in the past to tarnish the true meaning of the symbol. This board line means alot to me and my struggle to stay alive in so many ways ,in this very difficult industry !. I apologize if my logo or graphics offened you. it is not my intention.. But just my self expression of my functional art.
My words of advise, 'IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY! OR CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM! then, keep it to yourself!". The forum is a two way open communication channel for a positive outcome, so treat others as you wish to treat yourself!
Please keep the bashing towards yourself. What do you stand for? Who are you? Expose yourself!?Let me see! Live and let live... Be good to others and yourself. It is a great loving concept to live by...  I think you should get those gills wet and go windsurfing!...
A L O H A ! smile
Sincerely
Sean Ordonez

Re: SOS windsurf

I think Mark has a point, it was one of my first toughts too (time for a better google-sess Jeff wink ), but as a friend who followed the topic  showed me that you can associate pretty much everything with a 2nd WW:
Mark.....Marck....Bismarck.. you see wink  (no offense Mark)
Anyway there,s no sick idealogy behind the cross, so lets keep it to Jeffs very simple but healthy plan:

Re: SOS windsurf

The shapes certainly look nice in the pictures, but I'd like to hear more details about the construction and how much they will weigh.

Re: SOS windsurf

the Fish 82 will be around 5.5kg!! tongue:P

Re: SOS windsurf

Hi Guys and Girls;

As far as weights on my sos line of waveboards , they range from 5.2kg on the small fishes, 5.5kg on the classics to 6kg on the bigger rockets  The construction techniques and materials that I use give my boards a custom feel and look. I have been on the forefront of developing the carbon/vacuum sandwich constructions for the last 20 years of my career making numerous boards for many top level professional that punish their boards. I still see some of my 7 year old quatro boards around staying wet! A true testament of my commitment to quality and perfection over  generic production boards...
The V.E.S.T.(vacuum epoxy sandwich technology) is a technology that has been used in airplane and boat building for a while. We have adapted it to our sailboard use to help develop a good weight to strenght ratio.
We begin by making a masterplug that is handshaped (not computer) and R&D, until satisfactory. we then make a mold of this board. In which we then build our lightweight styrofam core shape that is shell wrapped with carbon/s-glass/inserts/boxes/high tensil strength epoxy and outer high density herex and airex skins. The exact duplicate of the master plug then comes out ready to laminate the final outside skin. We prebog the porous skin to seal holes and get it ready to accept the hand/table laminated carbon/e and s glass with epoxy. Once the lamination is on the board we do as we do with our custom boards, put the board inside a vacuum bag with peel ply(a bleeder cloth)to make sure the lamination is compressed and hugged against the shape of the board. Before hotcoating we post cure in a oven the board to make sure the right tensil strenght is reached for strenght and durability. The board gets hotcoated, sanded and painted and so on. Then just like that! ready to ride. Believe me, customers really get their moneys forth in this process of love.
Regardless to say there are alot of good boards out there. One of the most important factors of this construction that is key , as in sail making, is "FLEX".This is imperative "rebounding Flex" This is what is YOU feel!. In other words the spring back translating to forward momentum or drive. This is an area of board development I have been brainstorming on over the last few year (done before in the tinkler tail)
I have been translating this elaborate understanding to the development of my technology using the right materials to bring across that cool custom feel to my boards, Not too stiff! Not to soft! ... Windsurfing technology advances has been helping so many other sport grow!
You got to love our sport and the people who love it! Stay wet and forget about all I just said..
Thank you so much for your interest!
Aloha
Sean Ordonez

Re: SOS windsurf

I don't want to trash the forum, but let me explain shortly my thoughts, then I'll shut up ;-)

It has never been my intention to deliberately heart the feelings of people, and I am not personally offended by it, but I feel that as a design statement, from marketing point of view, it's badly chosen. What I mean is that its in some countries and beliefs a very controversial sign, especially in Europe. As a matter of fact we used the S.O.S logo on a t-shirt (promotion purposes here in Holland, so I promoted the brand S.O.S: a kitesurfer in my team rode SOS last year, so don't judge me directly ;-)), and then we went with a team of 15 kiteurfers to Maroc, with a Dutch/Marocan guide. How shall I put it, it was not really a succes with the Dutch cause they felt it a little German, nor was it a succes with the Moslims. So i do understand your point of view and totally respect the reasoning behind the cross, don't get me wrong, I am merely thinking it is marketingwise not the best design in some countries. Maybe you call it bashing, maybe it's constructive critisism, what you want. For me it would be a reason to question my decision whether or not to choose the brand. Just being honoust here. I love the enthousiasm of the brand and the team behind it. Maybe I made my statement because I was eagerly awaiting the boards, but am being turned off by the design... Maybe if I ride one I am sold ;-)

Cheers!
