Topic: The Birth of the Firelight

Hi All, check out what Jeff has to say about the new Firelight on the blog... some neat pictures of Diony with his GoPro too.

Re: The Birth of the Firelight

This is the sail I have been waiting on!

Will the new Firelight be as light as 5 Ocean sails  (5.3m = 2.95 kg) and Serverne S1 (5.3m = 3.01kg) or will i be more in line with the  SF UL 5.3 = 3.5 kg?

What abourt the Northwavesails Fetherlight, Northwave claim its the lightest sail, but do any of you know how light it is? And have any of you tried any of the lightweight sails, and are light weight = good sail??

Anyway the Firelight looks great, so when is the 6.0 on the market???

Re: The Birth of the Firelight

Peter, do not forget that static weight doesn't tell the whole story. A deep profiled sail (compared to a flatter one), or with the draft far back (compared to one with the draft far forward), or with heavier materials in the leech (than the comparing sail), can feel and act a lot heavier than the comparing sail, even though its static weight is a lot less.

Re: The Birth of the Firelight

Static weight is designed to beat other PRODUCTION sails. ie: S1 blade.
Final details in next few weeks as we tweak last details.

Re: The Birth of the Firelight

Weights, mast and boom lengths all coming next week...
However, maybe not 100% final, but very very close.

.... any sneak peeks of the color schemes/graphics?

Re: The Birth of the Firelight

The basic one is the one in the photos here.
The other are not final yet, and will not be right away. First batch of sails will be like the photo.

Ha ha tongue

Yeah, but I designed all the Carbon stuff Black/White & some red ... blue for alloy is like a tradition that pre-dates my work with Chinook...

Anyway can't wait to see the new graphics!

Re: The Birth of the Firelight

Check out Tom's mini-interview on the blog today in which he talks about his QUEST to make the lightest wave sail possible;

Re: The Birth of the Firelight

Nice!

I think we've now understood that it's light on the scale, which is great!
- But how does it FEEL?
Compared with Fire (and Bolt, Smack etc) in feeling, power etc would be really interesting!

Re: The Birth of the Firelight

faster, lighter and a bit more direct as a Fire.
Until you sailed a good and very light sail its to imagine how much easier everything goes when you drop a lot of weight.
Also worth to mention: notice the very short mast....

Re: The Birth of the Firelight

How about range - top end & position of pull? Forward like Fire or more back like Bolt?

Re: The Birth of the Firelight

I got a first prototype, that one is already changed on a LOT of points.
Different luffpanel,
shorter boom,
slightly longer luff,
different material,
a slightly different profile as mine.
To compare this means between the first and the latest proto are more changes as we have seen in the last 5 years of Smacks!!
So I really can,t comment the new one as its just too different.

On the other side, even if I would describe how the profile etc is, you really cant imagine how a very light sail like this feels until you sailed one.
It 2kg less as a Fire!!!!
Its like sailing with a extra (carbon)boom on your sail, how do you wanna describe that?
Its really weird to see what this does for your overall handling, jibing and early planing too. With a lighter rig you pump more effective, have less weight on the rig and i,m able to rig smaller as with a heavier rig.
Now we just have to wait and hope it will be launched quickly. smile

Re: The Birth of the Firelight

4.7, 5.0 and 5.3 are done.
6.0 and other sizes are not.
New cut is a lot more stable, boom is shorter, and draft s a bit flatter than first round, but it can be rigged quite full for power. The DESIGN is quite different from the Fire so it acts differently and feels crazy light.
Funny story: My girlfriend took it out and she can barely tell the difference between a DD and a superfreak. She was sailing a 160 freeride.  She Freaked out. She was so stoked, so confident, and was babbling away to anyone who would listen about how amazing the sails was. She has never cared about sails except the color so this was quite a response. Simply the sail is so light that every move is easier and you do not fall in as much.
Pretty nice result.

Re: The Birth of the Firelight

Think the speed of the Fire, lightness of the DD, maneuverability of the Bolt and stability and ease of use of the Liquid!

OK, so it's not going to have the durability of a Smack but it's not going to fall apart either! One way we lightened the sail was by using exotic materials like the Technora patches.

So it is not like the Fire, it is like what you always wanted the Fire to be! big_smile

Re: The Birth of the Firelight

When do expect that the European dealers can get the first 5.3 & 6.0 sails?

Re: The Birth of the Firelight

We are building 5.3m, but not 6.0m yet. So August/September respectively.

Re: The Birth of the Firelight

Hi Jeff,

I was very interested to read your girlfriend's comments on the firelight. In my case my bride is far more sensitive to differences in gear and therefore a far better reviewer.

Have you let your girlfriend sail the ULUS - I mean seriously rigged US - not just as soft as you can psycologically accept for yourself? If so how would she compare the two, specifically in perceived weight, gust absorption and range?

Can Joanna and I try one in Sept?

Aloha,
