So, is the summer sail project still alive?

Very much so.
The SpeedFreak was ahead of this, but now that is well underway and there is time to make the 3 sizes I have discussed here already. Look for this to be done before Thanksgiving.

FYI, Scout is a school sail, not a light wind sail.

Re: A Sail for Summer?

SummerFreak sounds nice , and Jeff, all those nice old sails (at least Mistral) had those nice ribbons steraming on top of the mast, or how do you call it (penant?), a long small peace of very light (UL?) sailcloth...;

Bu the way these would also suit very nice the Superfreaks.  I really miss those old days when you saw all those ribbons on top of the masts... Something that should be very easy to manufacture I suppose?

Re: A Sail for Summer?

I often tie a streamer onto the top of my Freak...  there's that little loop of line at the top with a plastic sleeve on it...  just clip/tie a tail right on  :-)

Can't wait to see these summer sails.  Pics ASAP please!

Re: A Sail for Summer?

I have kept my streamers from the Cort Larned clinics I was in long ago. I attach them now and then, and they're good for color / identification when you're out on the water. (Unless, of course, you're sailing a Freak in which case color / identification are NOT your problem)!

I tend to install a grommet somewhere on the leech (cheap grommet kits available in hardware stores), and attach the streamer to the grommet.

Other good uses for the top extension loop are as a tie-down when your sail is on the beach. I use a tent stake to "tack down" the peak to the ground and reduce any tendency to fly away.

Re: A Sail for Summer?

Mast-tip attachments and the mention of Cort reminds me of July 4th weekend 1987.  I was sailing at Swell City (Gorge) with Richard Whyte.  He duct-taped some smoke bombs to the top of his mast and I lit them for him as he waited in waterstart position.  Then he went sailing across towards Oregon...

Unfortunately, the strong wind swept the smoke away quickly and you could barely see it  roll

PS - he signed my 3.2  cool

Re: A Sail for Summer?

It will be based on NYocean's sail, less the maple leaf.

Re: A Sail for Summer?

What masts will the summer sail rig on, assuming 5.5, 6.5, 7.5 sizes?

Re: A Sail for Summer?

All "will" rig on a 430 I think..... 460 too.

Re: A Sail for Summer?

430 will be nice to keep it "soft"

Re: A Sail for Summer?

My 7.0 regular superfreak arrives tomorrow, just in time because I punched a big hole in my HSM 6.2 (not a bomber, acquired this sail before I knew better). However, I just discovered this awesome thread and look forward to these summerfreaks, because so far, all I sail are longboards/SUPs. Thanks for a very informative and entertaining forum....

Pat LOve Hawaii, or Pat Love Italy? Big difference.

Re: A Sail for Summer?

don't know... it's one of those sails here on the market in Europe in the late seventies ... always thought they were Hawaian (not Italian). I jost bought it on Ebay and waiting for delivery.

What about the summer sail Jeffrey?  Can I order one?

Yes, and start figuring your colors! Big horizontal stripes!
