Topic: 3 months on Maui

Hi!

Several people gave me advise to start a topic out here so here it is! I´m planning to come to Maui from the end of january/begin february until the end of april. Main goal is windsurfing of course but I guess I'll have to work too. My budget is quiet limited because I'm not having a real job here in Holland and just turned 19 last november (so I haven't built up a big savings or something). So therefor I was wondering if someone could tell me a little about the jobs on Maui and the daily costs (besides the 99ct-burgers at McD's, rather get a tomatoe;). For example a car: everybody tells me you need one, but I really can't afford me one for 90 days (that's the tourist visa limit). So is it possible to store surfgear somehow and then just go by bike for example? And how's public transport? I guess the bus doesn't stop right in front of all the best spots? For the rest I'm looking for a room or small appartment or something, but it will be a least 450$ a month.. Any tips for a cheaper option? And last one: how's second hand surfgear? I was thinking about bringing 2 sails or something and then buying a board on Maui. Saves me some money on travelling, because bringing it with me on the airplane can be quiet expensive (400$ one way with united!).

Well that's it for now, I hope I can get some good tips and connections out here.

Aloha,

Stefan

Re: 3 months on Maui

Hi Stefan,

unfortunately Maui is not particularly friendly from this point of view.
You can't store gear on ANY beach and you DO need a car, since the public transportation is minimal.
A cheap lodging option is the banana bungalow in wailuku (google it), where you can meet fellow windsurfers and eventually share the car, but most importantly you can meet lots of girls looking for windsurfers from Holland... ok, now I'm exagerating a bit!
Don't know much about under the table cash jobs (that's the only kind you can do, since you'll be on a tourist visa).
But the good news is that the used gear market is pretty damn good! Check the shops and the garage sales. I got some cheap old boards for sale too, email me when you get here.
Good luck!!

Re: 3 months on Maui

Thanks a lot for the info! Really useful! So it's worth considering coming over with no/not much stuff, good to know. I guess it will depend on the airline I'll fly with how much I need second hand (just found out that american airline ships them for free as second piece of lugage). I might go back with twice the amount of gear I bring with me wink Looks like a good idea to look for a girl out there (which ones a car), I'm just gonna do it otherway around: let's level out that money that all those guy over the world have to spend on their girlfriends big_smile

Oh one question left: A friend of mine told me you have to prove that you own enough money (which I don't) to survive your hole stay in de USA, is this diferent per state or is this a universal amount around the hole USA?

Re: 3 months on Maui

Ask your dad or a friend to put some money on your bank account and print out a statement with only the total after that. Make sure there's your name on it too. You'll show it to the immigration officer you will have to deal with.

If you have a job, or you're a student, bring documents that will prove that.
Anything that will show that you have interest and intention to go back home.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING is to show a return ticket with a fixed date within three months.

If it's the first time you come for a long period, it should be no problem...

Jeff, what's MVB?
