Topic: outer reefs

Hi GP,

this month in my calender of surf-magazine (Germany) is a shot which I love pretty much. It shows to riders of the gun sails team jumping side by side. Nothing radical- but the spot inspires me and makes me dreaming.
I think that the spot is camp one. But it is quite far outside. So maybe the break/reef has an other name.
From reading your blog I think you have good knowledge of the outside spots between ho'o and kanaha.

Can you say me if there is a regular surfspot outside of camp one?

Is there a general rule of the current flow at the channels.

In that picture upwind of the sailors seems to be a save channel.

What if you wipe out- does the current automaticlly pulls you direction to the channel?

I was in Maui for two times.

Thanks for some info,
Aloha Jan

Re: outer reefs

Jan,

taking a look at that photo would help... can you scan it and post it?
I am aware of two sailable outer reefs: upper kanaha (clear, safe and easy channel downwind) and Spartans (upwind of Sprecks... never sailed there).
I'm not aware of general rules of the current flows at the channels.

On an outer reef you want to have a channel. But if you fall in the impact zone, even if it's deep and you're not going to hit the bottom, the waves can break your stuff. If it's upper Kanaha, yes the current will pull you to the channel (also because it's downwind) and the other sailors can go and call the lifeguards (if it's before 4pm).
It happened to me once, in a day in which the inside reef was completely closed out at mast high plus... the ride on the jet ski was quite a thrill!!
That's why I don't sail spartans. I don't want to risk to have to ditch my rig and paddle hours on my windusurf board (not easy) hoping not to lose it when it's time to get through the inside reef... in which case I'd be in deep shit...

Re: outer reefs

Thanks cammer for that inside information!
I'm happy to learn and get info like that. I will put the photo here. It is really beautiful. But you have two wait a little.
