Topic: Life on Maui ... job market

Hey Giampaolo,

What kind of software engineer you are? Did you ever tried to find IT job on island?
Why I am asking? We (me and my wife) are planning eventually move to Maui … but we don’t have millions $, so we will work. I’m software engineer (about 10 years experience): mostly enterprise web application development (ASP.NET, C#, VB.NET, SQL Server, Oracle …) for banking, pharmaceutical, government.
So I wonder – is it possible to find job in IT on island? …and survive on that salary?
I'm also automotive engineer (around 10 years of experience) – that’s what I did before IT.
Also ex motocross coach and motorcycle mechanic with experience of racing engine building.

Re: Life on Maui ... job market

Maui has very few regular jobs. Most are in tourism or the fields that support infrastructure (plumbing, electrical, construction, driving, etc.). Automotive is big with many rental companies.

The U.S. Federal Government is the only employer on Maui that pays you more for working here in one of the world's most expensive places to live. So the rest often use the abundance of new people J.O.J. (just off the jet) to intimidate you into working for less than is fair and/or under less than ideal conditions. Hi Tech may be an exception?

Hi-Tech is here. We have a super computer in Kihei. Maybe Giampaolo can get you contact information. If not I'll look.

I believe if you are a skilled mechanic you will find a job at our dealership working on Audi, KTM, Kawasaki, jet-skis, etc. or for a large auto company like B.M.W. I doubt you'll find the money to your liking unless you see it as a 'means-to-an-end'. Most of us work for less than we're worth or accustomed just to be able to stay Maui. Most jobs don't have Kanaha, Spreckelsville, Ho'okipa, Honolua and Ma'alaea within a 10 minute to an hour drive eh?

If you want me to secure and mail you a job application for Maui Harley-Davidson/Audi, let me know MR.

Re: Life on Maui ... job market

We too are looking at living in Maui for a few years, or however how long.....

I work in advertising, design, press, Account Managment, but could sell pretty much anything and my wife is a Mechanical Engineer, with lots of experience. We have looked into living in Maui, or Oahu, with little success. First we have residency issues, which could be overcome if we were able to get sponsorship or suitable visa.

Secondly, as mentioned previously, the wages seem to be lower, and the price of living is high, guess thats the trade off. I have looked into advertising agencies on Maui and Kym has looked into Govt engineering positions.

Will keep you all posted.....

'Holiday planned in Maui for all of June next year anyway!'

Re: Life on Maui ... job market

Andrew,
I've never worked in the IT in Maui and I'm not interested, so I don't know much about it.
Here's the website of the facility that Bob was mentioning: http://www.htdc.org/incubation/mrtc/
The only High Tech I'd work in is the surf shop in Kahului... not even that, actually!

You may find interesting to read some facts on this page: http://www.globalissues.org/TradeRelated/Facts.asp

The first one says: Half the world — nearly three billion people — live on less than two dollars a day.
So, I guess, it is possible to live on an IT employee salary... even in Maui!

It all depends on the amount of unnecessary things you want. If you cut that down, it's easy to live with little. Bob and I are good at that, we can give you a free clinic...

And now, I'm really curious: if you work in the IT industry, how come you need a V8 truck for work?

I'm simple man, all I need couple windsurfing boards, sails, masts, booms, SUPs, paddles, motorcycles, computers... ;-)
...but my wife .... she refuses to live in a shed and drive old rusty piece of junk ... well, actually I also prefer new cars - they more fuel efficient. ;-)
I will never buy Mercedes or Lexus – I’m just too practical for that, but simple Toyota, Honda or Nissan - sure.

I have little side business - motorcycles related. That dam cruisers very heavy, I don’t know how people ride them, but they are most popular motorcycle type in US.
Also my truck fit all my gear inside of truck bed (8 feet), except SUP board.
Also I need sometimes drive on beach, that’s required 4x4.
Unfortunately Toyota sells in US (based on consumer demand – you know, Americans love everything big) 4x4, long bed trucks ONLY with V8 engines, no choice. Fuel consumption not that bad, considering size of vehicle – 16 mpg.

I'm http://www.advrider.com/forums/images/smilies/mecry.gif ... but what can I do?
Get small car for driving to work? Insurance will kill me. Do you know insurance rate in big cities? http://www.advrider.com/forums/images/smilies/vis.gif
When weather good I ride motorcycle.
BTW: How about car insurance on island? Expensive?
BTW: cammar, what you drive?

I had State Farm and they just started raising the price. I got Geico and pay $600 a year for liability only.

Re: Life on Maui ... job market

This is interesting...
Andrew, you mean that small cars pay higher insurance rates than big cars?
And why in the world would that be? Because small cars are more dangerous than big cars???
Because you drive sitting on a lower level with less visibility?
Because they have smaller tires?

I'm flabbergasted. I'm sure there's a lobby within insurance, car and gas companies...
Where's the environment lobby?!?!?

I drive a 4 cylinder, manual shift escort wagon and I get 32 to 35 mpg (13.5 to 15 Km/l), which is still low compared to the european standards.

How come cars eat more gas in the States? Mmm...

BTW, I don't remember how much, but I pay waaaay less than $600 a year for liability only with Geico. Bob, unless it's because you're a new client, they're robbing you...

They all are robbing us. Insurance, Car manufacturers, Oil industry. They all conspiring against us. Otherwise how to explain fact that none of diesel cars and trucks available in US! Toyota, Nissan, and Honda they all sell diesel cars, trucks and minivans everywhere … except US.

Sorry for OT.

Re: Life on Maui ... job market

I wanna move to Maui too!!!
Don´t know if one could call it an actual 'move' but I did move to Maui for 6 months a few years back. I hardly brought any money (since I had none) but made it by taking use of my musical skills... I was so lucky to get a job as a pianoplayer at the Fairmont Kea Lani hotel in Wailea smile
Worked about 3 nights a week from 6 till 10 and spend every day for the entire stay windsurfing my #%& off! Man this was the closest thing to my imagination of paradise.
Actually this was when I first came across HSM. Jeff sold me the first 5.0 Superfreak ever made. Very special sail...

Guess that fits all right into the tourism field.

A good question. Did you make dollar$ enough to pay expenses?

Re: Life on Maui ... job market

Yes in fact I did make enough to live, drive a beat up car, buy a couple of Hot Sails, pay rent...
But I also ate a LOT of fastfood to manage. Amazing how cheap food is in the US when you eat at Jack In  the Box or McD´s. 99 cents for a burger is about the same price you pay for a tomatoe at the grocerymarket!
no wonder some Americans tend to be a little overweight...

Why didn´t I stay any longer? In the end of April there were no more waves!... Well I also had a girlfriend back home plus the tourist-season is mainly in the winter time meaning less people to listen to my playing once spring/summer hits the island.

Re: Life on Maui ... job market

Thomas,
I understand the waves and the girlfriend, but FYI in summer time (specifically June, July and August) there's way more tourists than winter (with the exception of those two weeks at Christmas time)...
Plus, if you are a surfer too, there's some decent surfing on the south shore in the summer months.

Anyway, if you had to survive on McD's 99c burgers, it's a good thing that you left... If you stayed, you might well be dead by now!
Seen "Supersize me"? I hope you checked your cholesterol when you got back home...

The shittiest, unhealthiest food available on earth. And americans go crazy for it... and now everywhere else in the world there's McD's full of people... even in Piazza di Spagna in Rome!

The power of marketing can be lethal if associated with the dumbness of the market.

Re: Life on Maui ... job market

Guess I got it all wrong then...

I LOVE fastfood and cannot quit eating it! I eat a lot of fruit and drink only water (and beer) as a counter balance.
Thanks for the request Lano. I´ll be playing in Elsinore, Denmark next thursday. I hope you can make it...
