I have that book! It was a gift from an old family friend who was an obstetrician, now deceased, who kept a windsurfer on his 40' yawl and he set it up for my very first ride on a sailboard, back in 1983. I didn't get another ride on a sailboard until 1993, but I've never forgotten that first sail up on the 1000 Islands.

That would be really cool to see this CarbOne as the Olympic board. Same dimensions and features of the Kona One except a good bit lighter and more futuristic looking. Seeing the Olympians flying along on a board we basically have all used as the K 1.....Longboard windsurfing remains by far and away my favorite style of windsurfing. I found an old copy of "Windsurfing--where ever there's water and wind" by Glenn Taylor, in a used book mine. Very relaxing book to read from 1979, when there were basically only the Original Windsurfers. I was looking for the dimensions of this board, along with it's sail and rig, in the spreadsheet above. In this book, I finally found another reference to Jeff H.'s 3- piece shark windsurfer that he wrote about taking to the BVI way back. Still looking for convenient ways to transport gear and hesitant to invest in inflatables when not sure if they will be airline compatible. Locally, I just traded in my worn out Dodge Durango on a long bed pick up truck--works great for longboards.....

I think the answer is on their Q&A section:

6. Will CarbOne be a new class?

That is a question for Kona Windsurfing Association to decide. Kona Windsurfing will market CarbOne as an
exclusive niche product targeting those looking for superior material and performance. What will happen in the long run is too early to say. First we want to see how it is received by the market. But, it is not impossible to see CarbOne as a future Olympic board.

So it sounds to me like they're hoping that it'll perform well, get some advocates, and become the "unlimited" Kona for high level international racing.

The Olympic class is in a tough situation - they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. Something about windsurfing and planing -vs- non-planing causes people to forget that regattas are about the sailor, not the gear. Well, I guess the America's Cup sort of has that bug too - can anyone imagine them going back to a 12m class??? There are a whole bunch of sailing classes that haven't changed in decades....but the need to win at any cost makes it so that windsurfing and AC classes have to change all the time.

Dear all,
I have a 2010 *board 9'1 pro (29" wide @ 130li) which has had a good life surfing and sailing. I love it, but it is starting to fatigue from age and use. I'm wondering what would be a good update for this board.

I'll include a short review of the board, having owned it for several years: It plods up wind quite well by digging a windward rail (thruster helps, but I run a small(ish) rear fin 7") and it will plane reasonably well if powered up (off the wind, but not happily in the footstraps), I sail it with my 5.8 superfreak or 5.3 fire. It really comes into its own on the wave face. It has a flattish centre rocker, because it catches waves very easily for its length and width, with reasonably tail kick for turning. It has limited nose rocker and a big round mal style nose (which I occaisionally will nose ride).

I have sailed in largish surf (logo high... if I had a logo), but I'd prefer to be on my shorter board (fanatic quad 93li) because of the sup's penchant for pearling if snapped off the top of a steep wave and redirected down the face in bigger surf. It is much better to redirect it along the wave rather than try for too radical. With my current fin set up I also have to be mindful of throwing the tail out too much else I can't get it to stop sliding and I end up facing the wrong way and can't recover.

I originally owned a 2010 *board Drive, but couldn't hit the lip as effectively as this one, so I dont want to go much longer. My wife on the otherhand loved paddling the Drive (on flat water).

I could get an updated board from starboard or something else completely... musy be suppable.
I'm 85kg. Windsurfing and surfsailing is my interest, supping is my reality!

Very good clarifications Surfingsen. Compromises in either direction. I have the 11'8 Exocet windSUP which has full mast track and a planing undersurface. It windsurfs great but doesn't SUPsurf waves nearly as well as my starboard whopper. And the whopper doesn't windsurf nearly as well as the Exocet. The Amundson 11'3 SUP windsurfs and planes well because it has a pretty flat rocker, like the Mistral Pacifico SUP. And like I've observed, and nyocean has posted about his Pacifico SUP, these boards don't SUPsurf as well as they windsurf. Interestingly regarding the starboard whopper, it of the pronounced surfing rocker and excellent surfing performance and weak windsurfing performance, I have gotten it planing; but it took ideal wind direction, strength, and matched sail---ocean sailing, side shore winds off 15-17 knots, with a 7.0 superfreak.....

I agree, Todd. Your post and mine with Surfingsen shows why it's not so simple as SUP's aren't fun with a big sail. They can be. I also agree that newer designs ride a bit better than my Kona 11'5 (Exocet Curve), but when I got it there wasn't much better. We're seeing quite a bit of evolution in sailable SUP's. I really like the Fanatic Fly, great board for all kinds of stuff (and it planes easily, too).

Years back I got a Mistral Pacifico Wave (more of a wave longboard than the Pacifico) and I can get it to plane...but it flexes and wobbles underfoot such that I prolonged such use would risk breaking it so I stopped doing that. It's really a light wind surf sailer, OK, but newer boards are much better. That's why I left it at my friend's house near the beach, rather than keep it at home (or sell). It's better than nothing, and it's paid for!!

I also agree with Surfingsen that adding a mast track is not hard to do, dramatically adds to the versatility of an SUP, and can help improve surfing skills on light wind days (not to mention minimize the risk of getting skunked if you mainly want to sail).

Those who know my posts will know that I have big light wind planing gear and a course raceboard, but I should think one very attractive sail/board quiver is a sailable SUP and marginal floater shortboard (of whatever flavor one prefers) with a sail quiver that has nothing bigger than a 6.0-6.5. If you wanted that quiver to be limited to 2 boards, I would advise a versatile, maybe FSW, type of shortboard more to the sinker side and 58-59 cm wide (a real sweet spot in board/sea interaction in 5.0-6.0 wind). Bigger sailors may need a bit more width and sail size. If you can do 3+ boards, then a shortboard that just floats you (racey, freestyle, wave or FSW) and higher wind board are great mates to an SUP. This is where a 7.0 SF comes in really handy, since it gives the middle board a couple of sail sizes that work. It also can offer a little extra power on SUP days that need it (noting the most sail-surfing is done in the 5.0-6.3 range).

Either mix of boards is a nice quiver, and if you want to get a big sail you can throw it on the SUP when it's enough to plane and use a small sail when you can't plane. I still favor the big sails on performance boards rather than SUPs, but for a minimalist quiver the right SUP will plane and I would be surprised if the rider didn't have a smile at the end of the day!
