Connor McKenney – Youth Power
My name is Connor McKenney. I am 13 years old and I was born on Oahu. I moved to Maui with my mom when I was 6. I started windsurfing at 8 years old. I started competing in the Maui Race Series in 2012.
When I am not windsurfing I like to surf, read, sail boats, and eat good food. I go to Kihei Charter Middle school and my favorite subject is History.
I especially like war history and enjoy learning how other people lived and about their great successes and failures.
My favorite foods are grape leaves, feta cheese, brussel sprouts, lamb, buffalo burgers, salmon, pancakes, waffles, ice cream, chocolate, French toast, cherries, toast, fig spread, plums, apples, oranges, pizza, and calzones. I do not have a favorite color.
Connor’s words about Hot Sails Maui:
I remember once when Jeff Henderson invited me to go on a tandem windsurfing rig with him. I thought it would be awesome. So we lugged this massive board down to the beach and attached sails. The board was at least 10 feet and 3 feet wide. We water started and started sailing out towards the waves. I asked Jeff about jibing. He walked me through the procedure, but it was so windy that day we didn’t even attempt. Once we got in the break I was baffled to see that we were getting air on this massive board. We sailed back and forth for a while and then headed in. It was so much fun. I really want to thank Jeff Henderson for taking me out on the tandem board.
