SUP In The Rain

By Tom

I am kicking myself a bit about this post. We just got the new Go-Pro wide angle cameras in, but I did not get the memory cards and batteries until last night! So here is another all text post - I promise video next time!

Yesterday was the second straight day of non-stop rain. They were truly continuous downpours that flooded Amala place and dampened many spirits.

Bruno Andre somehow convinced Bart and I (along with his girlfriend Fab) to go for a quick SUP session at Kanaha. I opted for the Starboard 11'2" which is a really nice riding board. I went for the channel while Bart went straight out to the peak. He got lucky and claimed the first wave of the day. A fairly sizable set came in but I blew it getting dropped out of the back. Unfortunately there was a bigger wave behind (a little over head high) that was already breaking. I knew the only option was to lie down to catch the white water. It worked a treat except I was engulfed in foam and lost the paddle. There was no stopping the board and it took me all the way to the inside. I then had to paddle (lying down of course) all the way back out to the middle of the impact zone to retrive my paddle. I got a serious ass kicking before I managed to make it back out again.

I have to say the waves were a lot bigger than they looked like from the beach. The sets were over head high and definately the biggest I've ever been on on a SUP board! Bart charged the biggest wave I saw all day (must have been close to 10ft face) as I was frantically paddling out. He lasted almost 2 seconds! There was just the four of us one surfer and two other SUPers out. For waves like that the place is normally packed with 50 surfers. I guess people don't like to surf in the rain here. Our group consisting of Dutch, French and British surfers were familiar with the concept! It was great fun despite the pouring rain and I think I learned alot. The highlight was probably when Bruno, Bart and myself all caught the same wave and somehow did not run into each other. I would not have gone out if it had not been for Bruno dragging me out of the office - thanks mate!

Speed(?) Session

By Tom

The waves dropped off after yesterdays epic session so I decided to take the speed board out for a run as it looked quite windy. The wind turned a bit east and I got out too late to catch the best of it. It was obvious Sprecks was out of the question as it was too offshore and way too shallow. I decided to go to the nearest beach by the treatment plant in hopes of finding some wind inside the waves.

When I got there I had the place to myself, but within a few minutes Dan Ellis and Robby Swift showed up with a different plan - to go wave sailing! Normally speed sailing and wave sailing don't occur in the same spot, but hey this is Maui!

It turned out to be a less than stellar session as the winds were super gusty and too offshore. Trust me there is nothing worse than trying to slog out to the wind-line on speed gear! it was no picnic for the fellow Brits on their wave gear either! Dan broke his mast, just sailing along so he claimed! I took a break from the speed sailing and took a swim to help him get his gear in. I've done that swim in with broken gear quite a few times and I know help is always welcome!

At the end of the day it was a lot of hard work for not very impressive speeds. There was some potential there but the wind would just not fill in to the inside where the flatter water was. It was howling outside but mega choppy and slow. It was enough however to claim fastest speed posted in USA in 2009 so far! I get to gloat for a few months in the winter when it is too cold on the mainland for anyone to sail! Then the gorge boys all put me to shame.

Classic Kanaha

By Tom

Sorry I don't have any media for this post. I was too busy having fun to take any pics or video!

Yesterday we finally had the conditions Maui is famous for. A nice sideshore breeze and waves comingin at lowers between head high to logo high, maybe the odd bigger set. Having missed it the last few times I took off to the beach early just after 2pm. I rigged my 5.3 Fire and took my Kombat 106 as it looked a bit gusty. The session started off a little light but with a few pumps of the sail I was planing no problem.

It was definately busy out there, Ho'okipa must have been closed out as a lot of that crew were out here. So you had all kinds of sailors out there from wave novices to Levi Siver! It was a cordial affair however and everyone seemed to be getting along and having a good time.

The waves were a bit inconsistent and timing was everything. In the second half of my session I caught three cracking waves in a row with some great top to bottom turns with solid lip smacks. The next hour I sailed in and out and for some reason could not get on anything! A rain squall came through and as usual the wind picked up a bit. After the squall I headed to the beach as the wind enevitably dies. It did, and never came back. Thank goodness I got out early or I would have missed the best session of the year!

Ok, so what the hell went wrong?

I've been talking about this "giant" swell for days now with eager anticipation. This morning I dove down the hill to see some of the calmest waters I have ever seen on Maui. Absolutely no wind and no waves!

I guess I should not get too excited by the super strong Kona winds forecast for tommorow.

(Typically wind gusts are up to 50% stronger than the models predict)
