A month late...

Ok, so I should have posted this exactly one month ago, but I did not so here it is.

I did a short visit to the Gorge and hit the wind in a "productive" time. In one day I was able to test the 2009 Super Freak 2.9m (shown here in Black),

a Fire 3.0m, a well used 3.2m Super Freak Shown here in Yellow)

and a new 3.5m Fire. Not bad for one day.
I was super stoked to try these as n Maui it is nearly impossible for m to get time on such tiny sizes. Maui has great wind, but rarely this much in an accessible area.

The wind was strong, but we were demoing at Rowena, so no epic swell to play on. Temira and Pepi (Pepi owns Second Wind on Oak St and is our new dealer in Hood River) were my hosts for the demo and both were a great help and kept track of everyone on the water.

Messed up

Bear with us while our used to be rocking e-commerce site is down and out. Our supplier changed EVERYTHING on us and we were blindsided, totally ignoring their warnings that things would be different.
Hey, we are sail makers, not programmers!

8.0 Sail Testing

Blog by Tom
Photo and Video by Chris Freeman

The last sails to be completed in the 2009 collection are the GPS racing sails. This is because I can't do everything at once, the summer is a good time for sail testing and this way the 2009 GPS is the newest most advanced sail.

Although I spend most of my time on 6.0 and 6.6's we have a full range of sails and this weeks light winds were perfect for testing the big sails. I headed down to Kanaha with Juan and one of the shop's Starboard Futura 144L boards equiped with a 48cm fin. This is a good platform for testing the giants of the range.

When we got there it was a little windier than expected. Captain Greg was on a 7.0, so I rigged an 8.0 whilst skinny little 130lb Juan opted for the 6.0. The wind picked up some more as a rain squall moved in and I hit the water with a slightly over downhauled 8.0. Soon the wind was honking and I was having trouble keeping it all together. I decided to bear off and see just how fast an 8.0 could go. The result was a 30 knot peak speed! Later the software revealed a 30.4 knot peak with a 29.9 knot 100m, not bad for an 8.0 powering a 77cm wide board dragging a 48cm fin!

Boy that was a bit windy!

Not Bad for an 8.0, a 144L Futura and a 48cm fin!

Juan all kitted out.

Properly Powered On The 8.

The wind eased a bit and it was back to normal sailing. Chris Freeman was on the beach and took this video with his neat little waterproof camera.

Opps! I guess I did not see the anchor end of the swimming zone line. You can see the floats on the line at the end of the video.

Starboard IFCA Freestyle Worlds & Pro Kids Worlds

We have some news from Sorobon:

12 year old Amado Vrieswijk sailed into 1st place in both the IFCA Slalom U17 and Starboard/IFCA Freestyle U15 (and consequently U13).

There is more about Amado on the Starboard site:

Bjorn Saragoza clinched 2nd place in the U20 Freestyle behind PWA regular Kiri Thode. His little brother Jurgen took home 6th in the U15 Freestyle. Unfortunately I don't have photos of them, so I poached a couple from the event website (I hope Starboard don't mind!):

Also representing Hot Sails Maui was 11 year old Nik Van Den Eerenbeemt who placed 1st in U13 Slalom and 3rd in U13 Freestyle. Nik and his brother Mack-Dylan (10) just competed in the Aruba Hi-winds where Nik won both the Freestyle and Slalom.

I have not yet found the complete Slalom results, but I will post them when I get more information.
